India has some of the world’s top-ranked R&D Institutes, including but not limited to IITs, NITs, IISc, ISRO, and DRDO. Collaboration has always been the essence of R&D. Collaboration with Indian institutes and scholars provides various benefits such as cost saving, access to young talent, extensive market access, high-end technology expertise, and upskilled human resources contribution. Many promising Indian institutes still lack robust international collaborations because of various factors, and the challenge is how to unlock the R&D potential of Japan and India.

To promote Indo-Japan collaboration, NRI conducted a detailed survey of 41 leading Indian institutes (IITs, NITs, IISc, ISRO & DRDO) to understand the current collaboration models, the opportunities and the challenges. To understand better the challenges and opportunities, the survey incorporates perspectives from key decision-makers at these institutes. The survey also presents case studies highlighting successful collaborations and schemes by the Indian and Japanese stakeholders. These can act as great starting points for collaboration between institutes & industries from both nations.
